Company History

Five Generations of Family Business on the Level

Stenerson Bros. Lumber Co. was founded in 1889 by Norwegian immigrants, Sven, Gunder, and Knute Stenerson. The Stenerson brothers purchased forty acres of wooded land near Pelican Rapids, MN. While cutting wood for heating and cooking, they discovered that many of the trees were large enough for processing into lumber, which they soon started selling to their neighbors. This is when our first lumberyard was born.

As the business grew, we expanded our trade into nearby towns. Stenerson Bros. Lumber Company has had lumberyards in many local communities in Minnesota including Pelican Rapids, Erskine, Mentor, Felton, Borup, Halstad, Hendrum, Erhard, Averill, Gonvick, Fertile, Morris, and Crosby/Deerwood.  In North Dakota, the family has held lumberyards in Kermit, Columbus, and Wahpeton.  In the early years, Stenerson Lumber followed the railroads into each region, setting up shop in these growing towns.  Eventually, as motorized vehicles increased hauling distances and the railroad took a back seat in transportation; the smaller yards closed, giving way to the larger stores operating today.  At present, Stenerson Lumber operates yards in Moorhead, Fergus Falls, and Detroit Lakes – all in Minnesota, serving a regional area well into the eastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota.

We celebrate the same commitment to quality that has been important at Stenerson Lumber since Day One.   From our first generation to today’s fifth generation, the Stenerson family has been active in the communities it serves and encourages their employees to do so as well.  See our Community Involvement page for more on this.

Assisting professional contractors, home remodelers, commercial accounts, and do-it-yourselfers, Stenerson Lumber offers over a century of growth, stability, service, and experience you can count on.  Through competency, character, consistency, and care, we are committed to Business on Level.
