In 1885, Knute and Gunder Stenerson emigrated to America from Norway. They purchased forty acres of wooded land near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Finding that the trees were large enough for processing into lumber, Knute and Gunder sawed and sold the lumber in Pelican Rapids. This was the beginning of the retail lumber business for the Stenerson brothers in 1889. Over the years the Stenerson family has operated yards in Minnesota; Pelican Rapids, Erskine, Felton, Erhard, Borup, Halstad, Averill, Mentor, Hendrum, Fertile, Morris and South Moorhead. There were also yards operated in Columbus and Kermit, North Dakota. Today Stenerson Lumber operates yards in Moorhead, Fergus Falls, and Detroit Lakes in Minnesota. From the first generation until today, with the fourth generation active in the business, the Stenerson family has been active in church and community affairs. They encourage their employees to become an active part in each local community. Today, the business is considered a full-line lumberyard and includes installed sales. The company sells to and assists both the professional contractor and the do-it-yourselfer. We also have specialists that can design a home for the builder or help a novice with any small project.
